Alphabet Oracle Ἀλφαβητικὸν

The Alphabet Oracle answers in twenty-four short lines, one for each letter of the Greek alphabet, from Alpha to Omega. The querent drew a letter — by lot, by dice, or by touching the inscribed stone — and read the single hexameter line assigned to it. “You will do everything well,” says Alpha; the others range across encouragement, warning, and patience. Like the astragalos-tables, these oracles were set up publicly in the cities of Lycia.

The acrostic as checksum

The design carries its own proof of integrity. Every line begins with the very letter it answers to: the Alpha oracle opens with alpha, the Beta oracle with beta, and so on down the alphabet. This acrostic is not ornament — it is a built-in checksum. If a line were mis-assigned or a letter dropped in copying, the acrostic would break at once and betray the error. The edition preserves this rule as a mechanical verification, exactly as an ancient reader could have used it.

Why twenty-four

The alphabet used here is the classical Ionic of twenty-four letters — the form standardised at Athens in 403 BC and long the Greek norm by the time these oracles were cut, in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The archaic letters an older alphabet would have carried — digamma, koppa, sampi — had already fallen out of use. The acrostic of twenty-four hexameters is itself the proof: the structure of the tradition is certified from within, letter by letter — its built-in checksum.

A note on completeness: where this edition shows twenty-three of twenty-four, the gap is a missing verse — a line not yet recovered from the damaged witness stones — not a missing letter of the structure. The alphabet is whole; one of its lines awaits its source.

The edition

The text is drawn from Friedrich Heinevetter’s 1912 assembly of the Lycian inscriptions — the same volume that holds the astragalos-oracles. Individual lines are attributed to their witness stones (Syghyrlik, Limyra, and others); where copies diverge the variant is noted. A line not yet transcribed is shown as withheld.
